I have a confession to make! I am a bit obsessed with creating lotions, potions, balms and oils of all sorts!

When I was a little girl, school holidays were spent visiting my aunty in Durban, South Africa. She lived at the top of a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. As you can imagine, the view was spectacular. But for me, it was her garden that captivated my curiosity and sense of the existence of all things magic! Flowers that opened at sunset. Plants that could eat flies! Fat juicy leaves that when pressed would extract a sticky gel that tasted bitter! Flowers that looked like little fairies, or smiling faces! Herbs the aunties would gather to make potions or add to our foods! Spices we all learned to stay clear of!


The scent of various flowering trees, my favourite being the Frangipani, would intoxicate the evening air. All of us cousins would gather the delicate fallen flowers and gently place them into a container. When the bucket was full, we would rinse the flowers and press them with flat stones until they turned to mush! Then we would carefully pour out any liquid into a glass and use the rest of the mushed mash to put onto our bodies! The scent was incredible, and we felt so 'grown-up' prancing around with mushed flowers in our socks and armpits!!


Unbeknown to us, the aunties would take the extracted liquid and actually use it in their cleansing routines!
